BF Goodrich All Terrain's Rock!

The factory installed tires on our H2 were BF Goodrich All Terrains.  These are awesome tires!  They ride quiet, look tough and even do well in mud.  The most amazing thing about the tires is they have lasted 70,000 miles!  I was totally amazed when it was time to replace them that we put that many miles on our Hummer without needed to replace the tires.  I have Bridgestone Deuler’s on my Jeep Wrangler and after 40,000 miles they are needing replacement.  Now 40,000 miles isn’t bad, but the BF Goodrich ATs almost doubled that!

Stick with a Hummer Dealer

Out of convienence we decided to take the H2 into a local shop to have the wheel bearing replaced.  It seemed like a pretty routine task.   After about 4 days of driving we were headed to a family birthday party when the front end started jumping uncontrollably.  I slowed down and pulled to the side.  Fortunately I was only a few blocks from home, so I was able to get it back to our driveway.  After having the Hummer towed to the dealer I came to find out that when my local shop replaced the wheel bearing they didnt follow the correct proceedure to tighten the tie rods and the right tie rod had come completely off!  No harm – no foul, but I will never go back to local freds place again.

Side mirror trouble

If you ever think an H2 is just another vehicle then think again.   We had taken the H2 in for a problem with the side mirrors.  When you put the truck in reverse the mirrors would tilt down, but they would never tilt up again.  Strange problem, but it sure sounded like a computer chip type glitch to me.   Think again……

About a year ago the battery died.  Since the dealership isnt really too close I got a comperable battery at the local auto store.  According to the cross reference charts this was the right size.  It turned out that when the dealer tested with a factory Delco battery the mirror problem went away!  Needless to say we dropped the $200 for the new battery and our mirror problem was fixed.

Warranty Items

The biggest issue we had while HummerTime was under warranty was the seats.  The seat memory would not hold.  You should be able to click the remote for either dirver 1 or driver 2 and the seats, mirrors and radio station should set to that drivers preferences.  This took about 3 separate trips to the dealer to get fixed.

The airbag light kept coming on due to a faulty sensor.   The dealer was able to diagnose the sensor and replace it.  I have to say it took 2 different dealers a number of tries to figure this one out.

Stuck in neutral

One real interesting story was when we had about 90,000 miles on our H2 and had just finished a trip to Disney world.  It was about 5:00pm and we wanted to go to a surf shop to find some cool board shorts.  We walked around a bit and I bought a cool pair of Billabong shorts and finished my checkout.  We all got in the Truck headed for dinner and them home to Tampa which was about a 90 minute ride. I put the H2 in reverse and backed out of the spot, then put it in drive and nothing happened!!  I could press on the gas and hear the engine rev, but we weren’t moving. [Read more...]

Getting the mud off!

Clean and ready for school

After driving around a few days and taking the kids to school looking like a bunch of mudding fools I decided it was time to clean Hummer Time.  A normal car washing takes me about an hour.  This was pretty much an all day event.  I actually broke it down into 2 days.  The body, wheels and wheel wells were the first day, so at least the paint was clean and it looked normal.  The undercarriage was a whole other day.  I was totally amazed at where mud could get.  The steel supports of the bumper were packed with mud.  I used the hose and spent about 20 minutes spraying them out.  I took the 8 bolts that held the skid plate on.  I used a floor jack positioned in the center to help me maneuver it while I dropped it down.  There had to be 3lbs of mud on it and it had to weight at least 80 lbs!  Once off it was pretty easy to spray down the engine and the pan.  Even with crawling under the truck with a hose and spraying every area I could see, it still smelled like baked horse manure for at least 2 months after our adventure.  Our kids each invited a friend and everyone thought it was the coolest thing ever.

Our first mudding event

We have been driving this urban assault vehicle to get groceries and shuttle the kids around and the time came to get dirty.  Dew Hummer sent us an invitation to a mudding event held out on a farm north of Tampa.  The event was a guided by an experienced Hummer driver through a predetermined course.  We made our way deep into the Florida country to a farm about 80 miles north of Tampa.

Working our way through the course

Lunch was served and all the drivers were given a briefing on what to expect.  Our H2 had a bunch of transmission settings for all types of terrain.  We were told to keep the TC2 off and set 4 LO lock on.  About 20 Hummers of all models were in a group.  Some of the H1’s looked like military assault vehicles, but most were regular H2 owners having some weekend fun.  Our group leader started off and the line of Hummers followed as we drove over the makeshift trails to our first stop which was a huge mud pit.  Each Hummer would be given the signal and told to run the track without letting off the gas too much.  Naturally going around curves and hitting mud you had to slow down at times, but the trick was to keep the momentum going.  The mud was deeper in some areas so you could “get your feet wet” so to speak by gradually getting deeper into the mud. Some tweaks to the garage to fit the H2

We drove around for about a month prior to giving the new truck a name.  I kept going back to the MC Hammer song from long past named “Can’t touch this”.  Granted he does say “It’s Hammer Time”, but close enough for us.  And so the H2 got a name and this site was born.  I did have to make a few adjustments in order to get Hummer Time into the garage.  The first issue was that the rear roof rack hit the bottom of the garage door when pulling in.  Our garage has a 2” curb which was designed to keep water out right where the door closes.  The rear roof rack was directly over the rear wheels, so when we pulled in the wheels hit the 2” curb pushing the roof rack into the bottom of the open door.  [Read more...]

Picking it up from the dealer

Lynnet and Bob in front of commuter prop plane

Flying to West Palm Beach to pick up our H2

My mom came over to watch the kids and drop us at the airport.  We boarded the twin prop plane for the 1hr flight from Tampa to Ft Lauderdale.  I have to say this was a new experience for both Lynnet and I.  We have flown many times in our lives, but always on large commercial Jets.  We took our seats to prepare for takeoff and no sooner did we buckle in did the flight attendant begin moving people from side to side and front to back.  Weight distribution!  It made us a bit uneasy as you hear a lot more about small plane crashes than you do for the big boys.

Purchase day with the Manager and Salesman

We arrived safely in Ft. Lauderdale to be picked up by Randy, one of the salesmen at Hummer at the Palm Beaches.  The rest of the day was magical.  Our Bright Yellow H2 was sitting in front of the dealership sparkling and ready to start its new life in Tampa.  Marc and the rest of the team were amazing.  The H2 was everything we requested – no surprises.  Sunroof, DVD, Nav, Chrome wheels, Billet chrome gas cover.  We thought the billet chrome gas cover was locking…. No problem – randy disappeared for a few minutes and quickly returned with a locking gas cap.  We wanted the window tinted? Already done before we got there – no charge.  I will say with confidence that this was the most enjoyable experience I have had purchasing a new vehicle.  The drive back from Ft. Lauderdale was equally enjoyable.  We never thought we could own such a unique vehicle!

How we bought the hummer

The demo at Reeves was great, but they came across as a bit stuffy.  Basically there was no negotiation on the price.  We knew we really wanted Alloy wheels, a sunroof, navigation system and the DVD player.  When we put these options together the total came up to about $62,000.  Our budget was more like $55,000, so something had to give.  I went online and found all the Hummer dealers in the state of Florida.  I sent an email and copied all of them so they could see that I was blasting out my offer.  I basically specified in the email the color and options that I was looking for and the price I wanted to pay.  I always specify the out the door price.  This means after tax, tag, title and all those other “dealer fees” that magically appear.  Most dealers responded with either a sticker price or a request to call them.  [Read more...]
